I say to still go ahead and try it, but unless you have a firm contract with the NGOs– you might find yourself unwelcome in their offices if you are overly critical.

Thanks for your perspective Rebecca, I really appreciate it. I got similar opinions from people working in the media world (for different reasons though). I will reflect on the whole thing a bit. Let’s see what comes out of it.

I think if you are writing about NGOs as a journalist, it will be incredibly difficult. If you were writing on other topics– not so much of a problem. Your arguments are valid, but I think the main problem will be that NGOs that receive “critical” press will be reluctant to bring that person into their organization for any work- and word gets around quickly in the aid world. If you were critical in an internal report to the organization– that’s great– but when the public (aka the donors) find out via the press of the criticism, that’s a whole other thing. They begin to rethink their donations, and that jeopardizes the NGO’s funding. They don’t mess with that.
